    I have a question and it might be a silly one but I can't figure it out, namely: what are these numbers for? They keep changing as I scroll down a topic.

    I think it's:
    number of specific response <--- 1/2 ---> number of responses in total

    It's the number of the post you are currently on, over the total number of posts to that thread. The post number also appears after a "#" sign at the lower right of each post.

    I thought about that too but then I saw numbers "17/16" which doesn't make sense, so I decided to ask.

    That happens when you are on the unused post at the bottom that is for you to post in. You are then one post past the last used post slot. It's the number that post will have if you put something there.
