I've watched a few brazilian series (mostly web series) and in all honesty it is the language I find the hardest to keep up with. Really interesting to know that the two are so different from each other.

In some ways English does have a bit of simplicity, but whenever I am writing I realise how much it most suck for someone to learn English since so many words are spelled in ways that are just confusing. Which is normally when I thank my parents for raising me bilingual.

They really are! They are similar and we can both understand each other.
We portuguese from portugal can understand them well because we were also exposed to it, since back in the days, movies were usually dubbed in brazilian portuguese and not portugal portuguese.
But usually the brazilians can also understand us, but less!

That is so cool, Dutch is pretty close to Afrikaans since Afrikaans is a duaghter language of Dutch and as long as I concentrate really hard and it is not spoken too quickly I can understand most of it with my mind filling in the blanks

I remember hearing that somewhere I just don't remember where, that Portuguese speakers can mostly understand Spanish but not the other way around. I do know that some words in Afrikaans are bad words in Dutch so when communicating you have to be really careful.

I still remember my first experience with Spanish. I was at a beach close to the border, was about 8 or 9 and a kid came running to me and asked me "Quieres ver mi pelota?" which means "Do you want to see my ball?" but pelota in Portuguese means naked so I thought the kid was asking me if I wanted to see him naked...
I was like "Ok, I heard Spanish people were strange but this is a bit too strange..." XD

I took Spanish in high school but was never very good. Then just recently I have attempted to learn French but it's much harder than I was expecting. I guess I need to give it a little more time.

Lol that is the problem with languages that are close together it just takes one word to make a sentence sound not quite right for the other person.

I'm learning French and Japanese. I'm trying to study abroad for a year to get that essential immersion. In the future, I'd like to learn Italian and Swedish. (And it would be cool to check out Quenya or Sindarin too even if it's make-believe). It's still really inspiring to see how many people are multilingual at so many levels^_^

Hungarian and German are my two native languages. I had English and French at school, though the latter didn't survive to be a living spoken language. :D
But I still do understand a lot of French, and my pronunciation is very good. Because of that I understand some Spanish and Italien - and I had past relationships with both a Portuguese and a Brazilian, so I picked up some stuff there.
I lived in Norway for a little bit, so I started learning the language, but I didn't get very far.

Icelandic or maybe Irish would be great to learn, but both a rather hard to learn all by myself.^^

Well I speak Dutch obvs bc I'm Dutch. And English. I'm a writer and English is my favourite language to write in. I prefer British accents and spelling over American ones. I've had French at school and German but I'd never be able to make a conversation in those languages... or even ask for direction lol.
It'd be fun to know other languages. Maybe Spanish.. :D

I speak Dutch and English, English mostly for work as well. Besides that I speak German, lived there for about 6 months, and a bit Spanish. Currently following an online course to improve my Spanish, so I can use it for work as well :)

I grew up with Afrikaans and English. As far as I know, Afrikaans is a mix of mainly Dutch and lots of other things, so if a Dutch or German person speaks very slowly I can understand a bit xD. Been doing German on Duolingo and my language "wishlist"/goal would be to be able to also speak isiXhosa, German and Spanish (eventually).

Kan die Duitsers en die Nederlanders my verstaan? :p
(Can the Germans and the Dutch people understand me?)
