I would like to share this currently circulating petition and help it gain as many signatures as possible. Please support the petition by signing for Sheneen McClain, the mother of a victim, Elijah McClain, killed last year.
The life of an innocent 23 year old massage therapist from Colorado was ended after an encounter with Aurora Police.

Elijah McClain had gone to a store to buy items when a call was made to police of a “suspicious person”. McClain had a mask on because he was cold that evening. He bought his items and walked home.

Police approached him, giving him little time to remove his headphones and respond. He was quickly placed in restraint by three officers. He tried to explain that he was just returning home from the store, when one officer claims that Elijah reaches for one of their weapons. Their body cameras, however, fail to accurately capture the situation, becoming detached and obstructed on the floor. Elijah was treated as a threat, despite his smaller size and became unconscious from a chokehold. More officers and paramedics arrive and inject a high dose of ketamine. The victim died from cardiac arrest on the scene, was resuscitated in the ambulance and placed on life support and declared brain dead.
Within days he was taken off life support and died with his family.

The Adams County coroner said that the cause of death was “undetermined” and that “it could have been a result of natural causes, a homicide related to the carotid hold or an accident.”
Days after the autopsy report was released, Dave Young, the Adams County district attorney, announced that criminal charges would not be filed, saying there was not enough evidence the officers had broken the law when they used force on McClain.

This spring Elijah’s mother Sheneen pushed lawmakers to adopt police reforms. The case has started to be reported on again and in recent weeks the interim chief of the Aurora Police Department announced a ban on carotid holds that restrict blood to the brain, like the one used on McClain. Officers are also now required to report excessive force used by their colleagues.

Mari Newman, the lawyer representing McClain’s family says: “it’s clear that if the police had not attacked Elijah McClain, he would be alive today ...
They immediately went hands on and tackled him ... And of course the fact that all three of their body cameras fell off is something that we should all be pretty suspicious about. It makes it awfully easy for them to say whatever they want, but what we know is that they attacked him for no reason whatsoever. It was excessive force and it led to his death.”

A week ago the Colorado governor Jared Polis signed an executive order appointing the state’s attorney general, Phil Weiser, to re-examine the case and file charges if the facts support prosecution.

“Elijah McClain should be alive today,” Mr Polis said in a statement, “and we owe it to his family to take this step and elevate the pursuit of justice in his name to a statewide concern.”

Please be aware that not all campaigns, fundraisers and merchandise have the acceptance of the McClain family. If you do wish to donate to the family please find one that has their support.

Sign the petition if you agree that we should create a fairer reality and find justice for Elijah McClain’s family.

    Thank you for reading.
