Jodie Whittaker has been announced as Doctor Who's 13th Time Lord - the first woman to be given the role. The new Doctor's identity was revealed in a trailer broadcast at the end of the Wimbledon men's singles final.

The Broadchurch star succeeds Peter Capaldi, who took over the role in 2013 and leaves in the forthcoming Christmas special. Whittaker, 35, said it was "overwhelming, as a feminist" to become the next Doctor.

She will make her debut on the sci-fi show when the Doctor regenerates in the Christmas special

For all of you Dr Who fans, this ushers in a new age for the character which seems to be perpetually stuck as a white male. While Whittaker is the first female regeneration of the Dr Who character, actually actor Alex Kingston who played "River Song" (who also comes from Gallifrey) is technically was the first female Time Lord on the program. That aide, this is a small but meaningful advance for women everywhere.

And naturally some people on the internet are complaining about it. How annoying.

I think that it is fantastic, and it is really upsetting that people are threatening to not watch the show anymore because of the actor's gender. Doctor Who has been a show that encourages people to challenge their current thinking. I am excited to see what the show has in store for the 13th doctor!!!
