Hello, so the other day I called someone bud and they took offense to it and said that I was assuming their gender. Does bud mean male/female or is it just a general term for someone.

Bud is short for "buddy" and buddy is super gender neutral! I am a cis female and my dad calls me and my brothers bud all the time! Just because a male-identified person is more likely to be called bud doesn't mean its not gender-friendly! That person really has just taken it the wrong way!

I've always thought of "bud" as a gender-neutral word yeah. However (unrelated to the gender of the word), it can come across as condescending sometimes.

Is the other person's first language English? The only other weird situation I could think of where bud/buddy might be gendered is that their home-language might have a gendered term for friend.

In my home language, Afrikaans (and I'd assume other Germanic languages) the word for "friend" technically refers to a masculine friend: "vriend", where a female friend would be "vriendin" (I think the German version is Fruend und Fruendin). Even then, Afrikaans people often use "vriend" as a gender-neutral term anyway.

Maybe let's stick using bud/buddy/dude etc to person we really know or truly friends with. Outside it, it would only be proper to use their first names.
