A Utah substitute teacher was fired after she allegedly told a student who said he was thankful for his soon-to-be adoptive fathers it was "nothing to be thankful for" — and lectured the class about how homosexuality is sinful.

The unidentified teacher, who was working at Deerfield Elementary School in Cedar Hills in late November, asked a class of fifth-graders what they were thankful for this year ahead of Thanksgiving. One boy, an 11-year-old identified as "D.M.," said he was thankful he was "finally going to be adopted by my two dads."

"Why on earth would you be happy about that?" the teacher quipped, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. She then reportedly lectured the 30-student class for 10 minutes about how "homosexuality is wrong" and "two men living together is a sin."

Three female students asked the teacher to stop multiple times, and when she didn't, they walked to the principal's office to report her. She was ultimately escorted from the building and, as this unfolded, she continued to argue her point.

“She also tried to blame our son and told him that it was his fault that she went off," one of the boy's fathers, Louis van Amstel, who used to work as a dancer and choreographer for ABC's "Dancing with the Stars," told the Tribune. “It’s absolutely ridiculous and horrible what she did. We were livid. It’s 2019 and this is a public school.”

Amstel said school administrators immediately contacted them to tell them what happened. Amstel said their son was hesitant to talk, because he didn't want to get the teacher in trouble, but school officials put the story together after speaking to students.

The father commended the principal's actions to KSTU, telling the news station "she's wonderful, she's been really amazing." He said the principal, Caroline Knadler, escorted the substitute out of the building, telling her: "There's the door, keep walking."

Van Amstel said the incident made their son — who has been in foster care for years and experienced two failed adoptions — "so fearful that this could make us think that we don’t want to adopt him."

I've been in Utah all my life, it's sad that this sort of thing is still happening here but I'm glad that people are starting to oppose it and do what's right.

I remember a boy in history class making a pro rights comment about gay marriage and the teacher yelling "only a f*g would say something like that, are you a f*ggot?!" The teacher was never disciplined for it and it was extremely upsetting to many students.

Teachers shouldn't get in their students faces about what a kid believes. I know I had some homophobic and transphobic teachers but they have no business making a big deal about it.

On the bright side, at least this person (hopefully) won't be able to become a teacher anymore (seeing as they're a substitute atm).

I grew up in fairly conservative schools with homophobic teachers, but even they understood that a school is no place to force their views on children.

Strange how the teacher called the fathers out for acting in sin but their own actions were so incredibly devoid of love. Now I don't know about your definition of sin... but something isn't right here

Good job on the principal's side to be quick and decisive. Hopefully that will show the kids that this sort of behaviour is not acceptable.
Sucks that the kid was already probably fearful and now he's thinking "wonder how long it'll take them to get sick of me".

How long ago was this? What a horrible thing to say. That's a 12yo's edgy comment...

It was like 16 years ago. It did seem very childish at the time. No real argument on why gay marriage shouldn't be legal just the teacher trying to humiliate the student into being quiet.

What a shitty person...at least they are loud and proud of being homophobic...those are the easier types to see through. I think nowadays the real danger are the homophobes who are sneaky about it.

I'm glad she was fired. Holding homophobic views is her choice, but she has no business indoctrinating her students in hatred.

Fuck that homophobic piece of shit teacher! She got what she deserved. I'm glad this boy's classmates were kind enough to call her out on her shit and report her to the principal. Why can't more adults be like these kids? I hope the boy is alright. He should be thankful to be adopted, too many kids are still in the fucked up foster system and need good loving homes. This boy is simply thankful to have that and who cares if the parents are gay as long as they are willing to try and do right by this boy? That's all that should matter. The concept of "sin" is kind of bullshit in my opinion and is kind of a toxic way of thinking. Also, fuck that teacher! Glad her ass got fired, for fucks sake....how dare she ruin this little boy's happiness? Also, did I forget to mention she's a homophobic piece of shit?! Eww.

Are you ok? Even though I agree with everything you said, that answer seemed a little more personal than the rest of us here. You can talk to us :)

Yeah, I'm ok. It's just stories like this kinda get my dander up a bit. Also, I've dealt with some people kinda like that teacher so that's probably why my post seemed personal. I had my former neighbor say that, "She didn't agree with my 'choices' but she wasn't going to judge." She judged! She's a fucking hypocrite! Now, I know why I don't' deal with her, like at all. She never used to be that way. But all of a sudden she's like prayer this, sinful that. It's bullshit. So that's why I came across the way I did. It reminded me of her a little bit.

That sounds like my sister...it was all fine while it was hypothetical but as soon as I mentioned that myself and my son were LGBT she came down with a rant about how I was failing as a parent and as a human being. Thanks sis.
